Bimectin paste for horses is effective against benzimidazole-resistant strains of small strongylids.

Bimectin is indicated in the treatment of parasitic infections in horses by:

  • Large strongylids: Strongylus vulgaris (adult and arterial larval stages), Strongylus edentatus (adult and larval tissue stages), Strongylus equinus (adult), Triodontophorus spp (adult), Triodontophorus brevicauda, Triodontophorus serratus, Craterstomum acuticaudatum (adult).

Adult and immature (intraluminal L4 stages) small strongylids or cyathostominae, including against benzimidazole-resistant strains: Coronocyclus spp.., Coronocyclus coronatus, Coronocyclus labiatus, Coronocyclus labratus, Cyathosomum spp.., Cyathostomum catinatum, Cyathostomum pateratum, Cylicocyclus spp.., Cylicocyclus ashworthi, Cylicocyclus elongatus, Cylicocyclus insigne, Cylicocyclus leptostomum, Cylicocyclus nassatus, Cylicocyclus radiatus, Cylicostephanus spp.., Cylicostephanus asymetricus, Cylicostephanus bidentatus, Cylicostephanus calicatus, Cylicostephanus goldi.

  • Gyalocephalus capitatus: Parapoteriostomum spp.., Parapoteriostomum euproctus, Parapoteriostomum mettami, Petrovinema spp.., Petrovinema poculatum, Poteriostomum spp.., Poteriostomum imparidentatum.
  • Lungworms (adult and immature stages): Dictyocaulus arnfieldi.
  • Oxyuren (adult and immature stages): Oxyuris equi.
  • Ascarids (adult stages and L3 and L4 stages of roundworms): Parascaris equorum.
  • Trichostrongylidae (adult): Trichostrongylus axei.
  • Stomach worms (adult): Habronema muscae.
  • Skin nematodes (microfilariae): Onchocerca spp.
  • Strongyloididae (adult): Strongyloides westeri.

Contraindications
Bimectin oral paste for horses is specifically formulated for use in horses only. Do not use in dogs or cats, as unwanted effects may occur here due to the concentration of ivermectin in this product, if they swallow spilled paste or have access to used injectors.

Dosage
Read the package insert before use.

The syringe contains enough paste to treat a 600 kg horse at the recommended dose (200 µg ivermectin per kg body weight).

Each weight mark on the piston rod provides enough paste to treat 100 kg of body weight.

Loosen the knurled ring by turning it a quarter turn and slide the ring along the piston rod until it reaches the mark closest to the weight to be handled.

Secure the knurled ring by turning it back a quarter turn.

Ensure that the horse's mouth contains no feed.

Remove the plastic cap from the tip of the syringe.

Insert the syringe through the toothless space (the opening between the front teeth and molars.

Press the plunger as deeply as possible, thus depositing the paste on the back of the tongue at the back of the mouth.

Lift the horse's head for a few seconds immediately after administration.

For proper dosing, body weight should be determined as accurately as possible.

Directions for proper administration
All horses should receive regular antiparasitic treatment, with special attention to mares, foals and one-year-olds. This initial treatment of foals takes place 6 to 8 weeks after birth, after which they are treated as needed. The product is highly effective against gastrointestinal worms, cutaneous onchocerciasis, lung worms and horse hornets. Regular treatment reduces the risk of parasite-induced arteritis and by Strongylus vulgaris. Because of its broad spectrum of action, the product can be used as the sole antiparasitic or as an important part of a rotational program.

Special warnings
Do not smoke, drink or eat when using the product. Wash hands after use.

Some horses have shown reactions such as skin edema and itching shortly after treatment. Most cases involved horses diagnosed with severe infections of Onchocerca microfilariae and it is believed that these reactions result from mass mortality of microfilariae. Although these symptoms disappeared spontaneously after a few days, symptomatic treatment may be advisable. Consult your veterinarian if these symptoms remain present.

Resistance to ivermectin (an avermectin) in Parascaris equorum in horses is reported in a number of countries, including within the EU. Therefore, the use of this product should be based on national epidemiological data (regional and farm level) regarding the susceptibility of nematodes and be advised how to limit further selection to worm drug resistance.
